In the heart of the village of East Ashling, West Sussex, the Horse & Groom is an 18th Century pub renowned for excellent freshly cooked food, fine wines, and real ales along with 10 newly refurbished bedrooms and an active events programme. With busy summers due to its proximity to Goodwood and the Sussex Downs we welcome locals and visitors alike.

Over lockdown we have delivered free meals to vulnerable locals and raised £10,000 for local charities through our charity bakery and the efforts of our volunteers. Upon reopening we have been rewarded by strong local support and very strong trading.

Junior Sous Chef

We are looking for a passionate and talented Junior Sous Chef to work in our kitchen which is busy, fast paced, and full of energy. Our restaurant offers all-day dining and focus on using fresh seasonal produce to develop a dynamic menu. This is a new role that we are creating as we move our kitchen staff onto four days on – three days off rota to maintain a healthier work-life balance.

Your role as Junior Sous Chef would involve working alongside the Head Chef and Senior Sous Chef in a kitchen team of 5/6 . You must ensure that quality, consistency, and speed of service are always upheld and help to enhance development of our apprentice programme. As the Junior Sous Chef, you need to be able to demonstrate a good all-round approach to running a fast-paced restaurant; ideally, we are looking for someone who can keep their cool, have fun and make amazing food, fast and under pressure. In return you will get fantastic all-round experience and the opportunity to progress.

Role Responsibilities:

  • To contribute to a safe and clean working environment for all chefs according to Health and Safety legislation and regulations
  • To liaise and effectively communicate with the Head Chef/Senior Sous Chef and Front of House at all times
  • To help manage the expediting of food and ensure customers receive the highest quality of food and service possible
  • Ensure food production and standards are carried out in a timely fashion across all services and  every section
  • Must be adaptable and flexible with working patterns when required

Assistant Manager

The Horse & Groom are recruiting for an experienced Assistant Bar and Restaurant Manager to support the Head Chef and Manager of the pub. This is a new role that we are creating.

The Assistant Bar and Restaurant Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the bar and, in the absence of the Head Chef and Manager, in running the whole operation. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, and an easy manner with customers and colleagues alike. You will be comfortable coaching and supervising team members, running shifts during the week and at weekends and the normal business management controls relating to bar stock, margins, and sales. The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge of fine wines and ales, and previous experience of managing a bar and ideally working in high-volume restaurant service.

Day to day:

Waiting Staff

We’re looking for fun, enthusiastic, confident team players, who will be the friendly face to welcome our guests and offer excellent customer service.

You will be hosting within the bar and restaurant, taking customers’ orders, serving food and beverages, preparing tables for meals – including setting up and cleaning tables, preparing, and checking customers’ bills and taking payment. You will have good communication skills to provide a smooth and efficient service. You will know our menus inside and out and will happily recommend your favourites to our customers, whilst having knowledge of how various menu items are prepared, describing ingredients. Ideally, you’ll have previous experience in a similar role, but this is not essential, we’ll provide training.
